Sponsors Should Run Federations – Fisher
By Ayodeji Fashikun, 11.29.2004
Former President of the Nigerian Cricket Association (NCA), Mr. Yinka Fisher has advocated for a situation where the major sponsors of the various sports federations are the ones who manage the latter with an eye on recording higher quality of athletes, championships and returns on the sponsors’ investment. Fisher, made this appeal while speaking with journalists in Lagos saying, "Government cannot appoint some people to man the federations and expect sponsorship from the private sector. It’s not going to work. "If the Organised Private Sector (OPS) will finance sports, they should have the control of the federations. While ExxonMobil were sponsoring athletics, they were supposed to have a representative on the board. The same thing should have applied to Sans in squash racket, 7-Up in basketball, Malta Guinness in handball etc Their inputs are quite necessary. Development plans will be in place, properly planned and financed. Major sponsors should decide policy options while the technical people who today are in the saddle would implement the policies. This is how these things are supposed to be." He said no corporate organisation would bring in millions of Naira into sports and will not have a say in the organisation and management of such a discipline. "The way sports is structured in Nigeria today is not going to work. We have seen how these things are organised in even smaller African Nations, why can’t we take a cue?" His advice: "We need to take a decision as to whether government will continue to finance and control sports or hands off the two to private organisations to identify with the events, finance and control the sport of their choice. Finance and control of sports should be in one hand. It cannot be shared." Fisher’s firm, Iris Smart, are sponsors of polo, cricket and arts exhibition to support budding artists.
