Barcelona’92 Star Slams Coaches
•Blames them for Athens failure By Duro Ikhazuagbe, 11.29.2004
Chairman of Delta State Taekwondo Association, Peter Oghenejobor does not see any rosy future for Nigeria in the sport unless there is a change of attitude to how we manage sports in the country. Peters, who won Nigeria’s first silver medal in taekwondo when it was non scoring event at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, told THISDAYSports at the weekend that poor management by the Taekwondo Federation robbed the country of gold medals at the Athens Games. "There was no reason why our athletes to the Athens Olympic should not have returned home with gold medals if those in charge at the Federation were not selfish with the team. People who knew next to nothing about taekwondo were asked to lead the team to Athens. So what do you expect from such an arrangement?"queried the lanky former player. The Delta taekwondo boss is particularly worried that the set of players Nigeria took to Athens may not be in the best of sharp for the next games in Beijing, China in four years time. "This was the best opportunity they had to win medals. Both Martins Obiorah and Princess Dudu are the best in their categories right now in the world. Same with Chika Chukwumerije in the heavyweight category. I don’t know if they will be in the same shape in four years time." he observed. According to Peters the coaches who handled the team did not know what they were doing: "Can you believe that the same Obiora who failed to win any medal has emerged the champion of the European continent? He won the European Championship as the best fighter in his heavyweight category last month, yet our coaches couldn’t manage him at the Olympics."
