Yes No Indifferent View results Odili Inspects NUGA Facilities •Eats with athletes From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt, 11.29.2004 Barely twenty-four hours to the formal opening of the Nigeria University Games (NUGA) in Port Harcourt, Governor Odili yesterday undertook a final inspection of the state of the facilities ahead of the opening ceremony of NUGA 2004. The Governor also sidelined his official protocol, by joining student athletes from various universities in Nigeria who had arrived Uniport, in eating their food as a sign of solidarity with them. Governor Odili who had earlier inspected the NUGA Village, stopped his convoy when he saw students queuing for food at the Rivers State Government funded food centre, joined the queue, and when it was his turn, he was served egusi soup with a piece of meat by the students. But when the students couldn’t provide cutlery for the Governor, he immediately took a sachet of pure water, which the students were also drinking, and washed his hands with it, before eating the meal served to him by the students, with his bare hands. Surprised at this gesture, the students responded with a loud ovation and showered praises on the Governor while some thanked him as well.
