A New Orleans woman who cashed a $9,400 counterfeit cashier's check at an Arabi mail center Nov. 13 was booked with felony theft Saturday when she returned to try to cash an $8,700 cashier's check, St. Bernard Parish authorities said.
Courtney Williams, 33, 2336 Winthrop St., had a third cashier's check on her in the amount of $54,000. Sheriff's officials are trying to determine if the latter two checks also are counterfeit.
Williams, being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison in lieu of $50,000 bond, told investigators she was acting on behalf of a Nigerian man she met through the Internet who sent her the cashier's checks in her name, said Maj. John Doran, chief of detectives for the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.
Doran said the woman told authorities her deal with the man was that she would cash the checks, keep a percentage, then send the remainder to him in Nigeria via Western Union telegraph.
Doran said Williams admitted sending the Nigerian, Emmanuel Aborishade, about $8,900 of the $9,400 she received Nov. 13 when she cashed a cashier's check at Pak Wrap Mail Center, 7301 W. Judge Perez Drive, Arabi.
Authorities don't know whether the woman knew the cashier's check on Nov. 13 was counterfeit. But, Doran said, "She had to be suspicious" about it.
State and federal officials have been warning people for several years that groups of people in Nigeria have been running scams on the Internet.
Williams also admitted to investigators that she previously cashed a $12,000 cashier's check from the same Nigerian man and sent him back money, Doran said.
Thomas Fazio, who operates Pak Wrap, said Monday that the $9,400 cashier's check, which indicated it was issued by a Texas bank, seemed genuine when the woman came to his store on Nov. 13. But Fazio said that when she returned Saturday, his bank had just notified him that the first cashier's check was counterfeit.
On Nov. 13, when Williams cashed the first check, she also sent three Western Union payments to Nigeria, Fazio said.
