Okogie, Others Call for Tolerance
By Andrew Ahiante

Archbishop of the Lagos Catholic Archdiocese, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie has called on Nigerian leaders to listen to the voice of elders as it imparts wisdom, even as Landmarks Pressure Group also called on Nigerians to exercise patience and tolerate Federal Government policies.

In his goodwill message to Nigerians the Cardinal pointed out that the popular saying "Vox Populi Vox Dei" was still relevant in today's dispensation.

"Those in power should learn to listen to alternative opinions", Okogie declared in a statement made available by his Director of Social Communications, Reverend Father Gabriel Osu. He also wished Nigerians well.

Okogie cautioned leaders to stop seeing their critics as their personal enemies. According to him, "God uses men to talk to men", adding that God will not use animals to talk to men.

On the much orchestrated economic reforms by the Federal Government, resulting in the constant increases in the price of petroleum products, the Cardinal regretted that the common man was yet to feel the impact of the policies. He pointed out that "the poor are yet to benefit from the reforms".

He consequently urged the Federal Government to tackle the problem of unemployment and poverty especially among the youths. He particularly pleaded with the federal government to pay special attention to the youths since they are the future of the nation.

He observed that all was not well with the nation especially on security.

According to him, events such as the un-resolved murder of Chief Bola Ige and the discovery of Okija shrine were had signs.

He also reminded politicians that the money they make in the corridor of power cannot last.
