'Politicians Betray Founding Fathers' From Agaju Madugba in Kaduna Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, yesterday lamented that the present generation of politicians have betrayed the hope and dreams of the nation's founding fathers. According to him, 44 years after the country attained political independence, majority of citizens are still oppressed in their fatherland, contrary to the expectations of the heroes who fought for Nigeria's liberation. Makarfi, in a message sent to Kaduna people on the nation's 44th independence anniversary, noted however that, "we have every cause to celebrate and give thanks to the Almighty Allah." He explained that, in spite of years of turbulence, Nigeria has been able to survive. Makarfi said that the nation was on the verge of collapse, but for God's intervention through the restoration of democratic rule. According to him," as I join all in celebrating this momentous occasion, I cannot fail to implore us to continue to do everything to ensure that we nurture democracy already taking firm roots, so that generations would not go through the same trauma as we did. "The surest way to sustain democracy is to engender an atmosphere of peace, and respect for one another." Makarfi noted that the peace which Kaduna has known for sometime now had made it possible for government to concentrate on discharging its duties and fulfilling the campaign promises.
