'No Cause to Celebrate' From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt At 44, Nigeria has no cause to celebrate its independence anniversary, says Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (HRHL), a non-governmental organisation based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. "For the Nigerian State, the report card after 44 years of chequered existence is that of a rapidly failing state in the stronghold of pervasive corruption against which there is no sincere offensive". "The level of pervasive poverty, insecurity and failing infrastructure in the face of ill-conceived policies that has further enriched those living above poverty level appals the institute". Mr. Ken Atsuwete of the IHRHL yesterday while commenting on Nigeria at 44 said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led government appears handicap and lack a clearly defined economic programme that has made it possible for the pursuit of policies that would create employment, investment and secure lives and property of Nigerians. "Beyond the almost quarterly increase in the prices of petroleum products, we have been selling our assets yet we do not know where our money is going. We have been earning money, yet we do not know where our money has been going. All you hear all the time is that there is no money.
