Igbinedion Frees 8 Prisoners From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City Eight persons serving various jail terms in Edo State have regained the ir freedom, courtesy of Governor Lucky Igbinedion's exercise of the statutory "Prerogative of Mercy." The governor, in his directive to the Comptroller of Prisons, Edo State Command, yesterday, said the prisoners, whose offences were categorised as stealing, were granted pardon to commemorate Nigeria's 44th Independence Anniversary today. He, however, noted that his decision was guided by the recommendation of the "Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy," saying it was "in the exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republlic of Nigeria 1999 and all other laws enabling me in that behalf." The eight persons pardoned were Enowamagbe Ohehen, Oziegbe Igbinosa, Nosa John, Wilson Odoma, Hassan Chiroma, Christopher Ugah, Saliu Isah Afege and Ojo Adeniji. However, the state chapter of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has, in a release said NIgeria has become a "vandalized fatherland" in 44 years of political independence, saying Edo people were bearing particularly severe pains because of the greedy ruling class.
