...NUJ, NMA Decry New Price Hike
By Andrew Ahiante

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) have joined in condemning the recent increase in the prices of petroleum products by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The NUJ, through its National President, Comrade Smart Adeyemi, reminded Obasanjo that as president, he was not the only one who loves Nigerians, emphasising that his economic reforms should have a "human face".

He urged Obasanjo not to portray himself as a medical doctor who ignores a patient with malaria to discover that he needs 54 injections.

"Obasanjo's economic programme can be compared to a doctor who diagnosed a malaria patient and discovered that he needs 54 injections.

Accordingly, the NUJ President said rather than curing the patient, the injections will end up killing him.

Adeyemi urged the president listen to the cries of Nigerians, economic reforms without political reform will amount to chaos.

Meanwhile the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has said constant increase in the price of petroleum products will spell doom on the nation's health sector.

In a press release signed by Dr. Wole Atoyebi and Dr. Olukayode Akinlade, President and Secretary-General, respectively, the group said it was shocked that despite previous appeals from well meaning individuals, groups and organisations on the need to maintain petroleum prices at affordable levels, the Federal Government still went ahead to increase prices by as much as 27 percent with attendant implications for health and other sectors of the economy.

The group described as disheartening a situation whereby 70 percent of Nigerians still live on a parlous sum of less than one US dollar a day, despite the fact that the nation is among the largest oil producing countrues in the world.
