UNAAB Students, Police Clash From Toba Suleiman in Abeokuta Students of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) and men of the Ogun State Police Command yesterday clashed during a protest. Many students were injured while properties worth millions of Naira were also destroyed. The clash, according to sources was the students protest over the recent hike in the pump prices of petroleum products by the Federal government. THISDAY learnt that the protest which was non-violent initially degenerated into a full-blown one when students who were said to have wielded missiles began to destroy vehicles and other properties. When the situation became uncontrollable police were then invited to quell the fierce demonstration. According to the Students Union President, Comrade Wole Oladepo, no fewer than 15 students were injured by the police who were invited by the school authorities. He disclosed further the anti-riot police who were heavily armed fired tear gas canisters in the midst of the students to disperse them. Besides fuel price hike, it was further learnt that the students were protesting N3.5 million allegedly paid to the UNAAB authorities by management of MTN for erecting its masts within the campus. And that MTN had equally refused to yield to the demand of the students who wanted the MTN to give bonanza to the Students Union.
