CNPP Flays Council of State
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja
Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has criticised the National Council of States for authorising President Olusegun Obasanjo to use legitimate means to crack down all groups threatening the security of the country.
On Tuesday, at the meeting of the National Council of States, the Council empowered the President to use all legitimate means to maintain security in the country.
A statement by the General Secretary of CNPP, Maxi Okwu, said the Council lacked the powers it assumed since it was only an advisory body.
"It should be clear to all that the purported mandate to Obasanjo by the National Council of State is a ruse and a mere smoke screen to enable him have cover to finally mop up any remaining dissenting voices or opposition.
"By the provisions of Section 153 Third Schedule Part 1(B) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the Council of State is a mere advisory body, it has no such powers. You don't give what you don't have."
Also CNPP condemned the preferential treatment given to Asari Dokubo of Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) by the President, claiming that Dokubo represented the interest of the colonialists who are milking the country dry through their oil exploration.
"Obasanjo can afford to send a private jet to collect Dokubo and negotiate with him because the economy of neo-colonialist USA would be adversely affected if the NDPVF makes good its threat to shut down Nigerian oil wells.
"Contrast the treatment to Dokubo with the shoddy treatment meted to Dim Ojukwu who was sent one-way plane ticket to hell."
CNPP said what was happening now was the beginning of attempts to crush opposition as it predicted with the declaration of emergency rule in Plateau State. The coalition of the opposition parties cited the invasion of the Insider magazine, as part of President's onslaught against the opposition.
