Nigeria Shelves Plans to Host IPU
From Kola Ologbondiyan in Geneva

As the 111th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting closes in Geneva today, Nigeria yesterday shelved plans to host the event in 2007 on the grounds that incoming parliamentarians would not have the space to host the world.

The quest to host the parliamentarian body in 2007 would now be fought between Ethiopia and Thailand.

No fewer than two senators: Chairman Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Senator Uche Chukwumerije and his Public Accounts Committee counterpart, Senator Mamman Ali, who are in Geneva for the IPU conference confirmed this yesterday.

Ali, who spoke with THISDAY, said "Nigeria has been looking for the opportunity of hosting the next IPU session but for the timimg.

"We have realised that the timing would rhyme with our election timetable in 2007 and we have to now shift it. We have decided to stand down our request for hosting the event in 2007 to another year after that when a new National Assembly would have been inaugurated and members would have been on ground.

"We could have succeeded in getting our coleagues support in hosting the event but for the election timetable," Ali said further.

But Chukwumerije, who gave a different reason, said the IPU authorities told the Nigerian delegation in clear terms that "the move to host the event was belated."

According to the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs chairman, "they (IPU authorities) told us that the quest for hosting is already closed because the two countries had earlier indicated interest.

"For IPU, the principle of first come first serve applies strictly. It is not an issue of gambling. So, I'm afraid we can't get it," he added.
