Christians Begin Search for Obasanjo's Succesor
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, (PFN), Dr Mike Okonkwo, has hinted that Christian leaders in the country have begin shopping for a candidate to succeed President Olusegun Obasanjo
Okonkwo, who spoke to newsmen in Ilorin, said the church has been mobilising to create awareness for the plum post among christians, so as to reduce tension in the polity and avert any ugly consequences the rabid ambition of the former military leaders may foist on the country.
Okonkwo was in Ilorin for the National Ministers' Conference.
He expressed misgivings at the naked ambition for the coveted position and pleaded with aspirants to allow their aspiration be guided with service to the people.
"As a matter of fact, the church is also mobilising. I dare say that we are crossing boards to present candidates who in truth and spirit will want to serve the nation.
"Let me say it to those who are gunning for political offices that 2007 would elude them. It would not be like before, because we are also putting structures on ground that would checkmate them," he added.
He said unless proper checks and balances were put in place to checkmate the military chiefs, their ambition may increase restiveness in the country and "that would be disastrous.
Okonkwo restated the call for a national conference to address the problems confronting the nation.
