Rivers Expresses Confidence in Police Rivers State Government has expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian police to provide security in the state, stressing that enlisting the services of any surrogate group was not on the agenda of the government. State Deputy Governor, Sir Gabriel Toby, said this in response to speculations that cult activities escalated in the state because those involved were allegedly used to enthrone the government in power in 1999, but were later abandoned. Toby spoke when members of the Senate committee on Police Affairs visited him at government house, Port Harcourt, expressing optimism in the services of the Nigerian police . Admitting that members of the force face many challenges on the job, Toby pointed out that performance of the police in the state shows that investment of the state government in the force was meaningful. He maintained that the Nigerian police have distinguished itself as the best in Africa, judging by the successes recorded during various international engagements. He commended the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Tafa Balogun and members of the Senate for motivating the officers in various ways, reassuring that the state government would continue to assist the police. Lauding the Senate for the speedy treatment it accorded the Police Trust Fund Bill before it, Toby urged the media to encourage and motivate the police by according them positive remarks, when they do well and criticise constructively when the need arises.
