Egwu Proposes Additional 300 Classroom Blocks Ebonyi From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki Ebonyi State Governor Dr Sam Egwu, has said, it would build 300 classroom blocks in primary schools before October next year to provide accommodation for the increasing number of pupils who are taking advantage of the free and compulsory education introduced by the state government in 1999. Egwu disclosed this while speaking at Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone during the zonal celebration of the 44th Independence Anniversary and eigth years of the creation of Ebonyi State and also introduced Ebonyi citizens day, which would be marked October 1, every year, as part of independence anniversary celebration. Restating his readiness to fight illiteracy, Egwu said the rate of enrolment has quadrupled since the introduction of free education in the state and to improve on the quality of education, a better learning environment must be created, saying this would be part of efforts the state is making to improve learning. He said the citizens day would create a forum where ordinary people and the state governor would sit together and deliberate on issues that affect the state, especially those at the grassroots, noting that when achieved, it would be the epitome of democratic tenets and the opportunity to hear from the people and learn how to serve them better. According to Egwu, Ebonyi State has declared each of the three days as public holidays, to enable the people participate fully in the exercise.
