Govt to Boost Economy Through Tourism

Governor Achike Udenwa of lmo State has announced that necessary policies would be put in place to ensure that large chunk of the state's economic base is realised through tourism.

Udenwa said this in his address during this year's World Tourism Day held at the lmo Concorde Hotel, Owerri.

Represented by the Commissioner of Education, Dr Gloria Chukwukere, Udenwa said the state has realised that there are great potentials in tourism industry, as a lot of financial resources could be realised from it, as the case in some states.

He said the state government was ready to survive without necessarily depending on federal allocation, adding "lmo state is one of the most highly marginalised states in the country. Over these years, it has been battling to survive economically, despite the lean federal allocation, contrarey to what obtains in other states.

"As part of government's policy to ensure a reliable and strong economic base for the state, government has embraced the tourism sector as a preffered sector like the Federal Government," he said.

He outlined tourists attractions in the state, such as, Oguta Lake, Holiday Resort, Ojukwu Bunker, Sunk Boat, the Oguta slave route, Lagwa Monkey Colony, lgwekala, Umunoha and Nworie Green Belt among others, as areas to pay greater interest to.

He commended efforts of the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Tourism, pledging to support their good ideas in the tourism sector, so that the state could join other states whose economy has improved through tourism has turned.

Earlier, Commissioner for Commerce, lndustry and Tourism, Chief Goddy Obodo said his ministry was working towards the development of some tourism destinations in the state such as Nekede Zoological Garden, the Nworie Otamiri Green Belt, the Tourism Museum Oguta, Abada Lake among others.

He noted the effort of hotel proprietors in developing the state, stressing thatr the state with natural and anthropogenic tourism potentials need more development given necessary enabling environment.
