Lagos Celebrates World Habitat Day
Lagos
By Akpan Unyime

As part of its programme to celebrate this year's World Habitat day, the Lagos State government has concluded plans to exhibit the planned outline of the proposed Tejuosho Market at Yaba, on October 4.

At a press briefing to create awareness, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hakeem Gbajabiamila disclosed that the new design and concept would recognise those he described as 'peasant traders', who before the fire displayed their wares by the road side because they could not afford rents, stating that they would occupy the ground floor of the buildings.

He said the World Habitat Day is a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly under resolution No. 40/2024 of December 1985, to focus on the problems of human settlements. Nigeria as a member, he said, is obliged to join other countries in celebrating the day.

While saying the day would be declared open by the state Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Gbajabiamila noted the peculiarity of this year's event which has as its theme 'Cities-Engines of Rural Development'.

He said in view of its emerging status as one of the most densely populated human settlements on earth, the projected population of the state would rise to 25 million, from its present 12.5 million, by 2015. The doubling effect, he said, would be brought about largely by migration from other parts of Nigeraia, particularly the rural communities.

Gbajabiamila wondered how the state would be able to cope with a population of 25 million where that of 12.5 million is giving the state government great course for concern, admitting that it is important the figure is projected to enable government plan ahead.
