Leprosy, Tuberculosis Centre to Be Equipped Bayelsa From John Iwori in Yenagoa In a concerted effort to improve the healthcare delivery in the state, Bayelsa State government has concluded plans to provide additional structures and equipment for Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Centre at Igbogene, Yenagoa. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ayibapreye Baralatei, who disclosed this in Yenagoa while declaring open a 3-day training workshop for health officers, said leprosy and tuberculosis are ancient but endemic diseases that have caused permanent disabilities to victims. Baralatei, who was represented by the Acting Director of Primary Healthcare and Disease Control, Dr. W. E. Sawyer, lamented the social and economic implications of the disease in the society, even as he stressed the need to vigorously curtail tackle it in the state. He expressed government's commitment to expand the Tuberculosis and Leprosy Centre to meet up with global standards. The commissioner, who lauded Federal Government and Germany for their immense contributions to leprosy and tuberculosis control in the state, appealed for the assistance of spirited individuals and the multinational oil companies to ensure the disease is effectively curtailed in the state. He urged the participants to live up to expectations of the people by taking their jobs seriously, noting that the purpose of the workshop would be defeated if the desired objectives were not achieved. He explained that with the active participation of all concerned, tuberculosis and leprosy would be eliminated in the state.
