From Josphine Lohor in Abuja
Former Minister of Special Duties during late, General Sani Abacha's regime, Alhaji Wada Nas, has expressed optimism that President Olusegun Obasanjo would not seek a third term in the 2007 Presidential election.
Nas, speaking against the backdrop of President Obasanjo's recent declaration on the CNN that a third term was unconstitutional, said this has cleared any doubt of his intetion to manipulate the constitution in order to, perhaps, remain in power for life.
He said since the President took "that solemn vow before the international community, I hereby withdraw all my words of doubt until perhaps he suddenly changes his mind, which i doubt he will, and I believe he will not. Promises are vows of honourable men".
Nas stated that "this is a glorious announcement for both himself and Nigerians" which he deserves commedation for, having ruled out himself as a candidate for 2007, let him on building strong democratic structures as part of his lasting legacy.
"Let him demonstrate that he is a father to all Nigerians by ensuring that a free and fair election is organised in 2007. As a neutral person, he has now the gloden opportunity to be fairmined in handling the 2007 elections. Let him lay a solid foundation of our democracy in the years ahead.
"Finally, I join millions of Nigerians in prasing him (Obasanjo) for having the instigating him to damn the consequences and do as other African Leaders. It is glorious that he has decided to follow the footsteps of Jerry Rawlings of Ghana who has proved a shining example to Africa democracy", he added.
Nas, who noted that Obasanjo has by the CNN interview "made a very valid judgement and should therefore stick to it" adding that "having heard him on the CNN on September 26, 2004, where he categorically denounced any attempt by him to seek for a third term, I am bound to respect his viens in theis regard. As a man of honour, I have no reason to believe that he will change his mind 'under pressure' as he did in 1999".
Nas said that "the way and manner he responded to questions during the CNN interview, has convinced me, for now and perhaps until some new developments, that he is sincere that he will not seek for third term".
