Incessant strikes weaken economy, says Fayose
From Ifedayo Sayo,
Ado-Ekiti

AS the nation prepares for another round of strike being spearheaded by Labour unions, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has cautioned against the proposed action.

Fielding questions from journalists yesterday, Fayose said the nation's economy cannot afford incessant strikes by workers, adding that dialogue between the workers and the Federal Government was a better option to resolve the differences over the fuel price increase.

He said the government could no longer accommodate subsidy on fuel, pointing out that Nigerians should be educated on why the government took the painful but unavoidable decision.

HE said there was need for a meeting of minds on the issue of appropriate pump price to avoid "unnecessary threat" to the nation's democracy.

Fayose noted that the recent increase in fuel price would aggravate the hardship of the people and called for "necessary palliatives" to cushion the effect of the increase.

According to him, there should be a "meeting point" on the issue.

His words: "I mean government should dialogue with workers and stakeholders to arrive at a convenient fuel price that would be acceptable to all parties.

"The workers should not go on rampage or strike, as such action would not solve the problem. The government, I am sure, would introduce some palliatives to cushion any hardship caused by the increase in fuel price".

He also announced that contracts for the dualisation of Ado-Ekiti township road would be awarded in the next two weeks, adding that only competent contractors would be allowed to handle the job.

Fayose also spoke on the renovation of the state's stadium. According to him, about N165 million was being expended on the first phase of reconstruction.

He said when completed, the stadium would house about 10 indoor games, including swimming, boxing and weightlifting.

The governor also disclosed that contract for the reconstruction of Ado-Ekiti-Otun Kwara State border road would be awarded next month by the Federal Government.
