Robbers raid bank, kill two
From John-Abba Ogbodo (Abuja) and
Odita Sunday (Lagos)

ARMED bandits in Abuja yesterday stormed a bank, killing two policemen and injuring three others.

The Guardian gathered that at about 9 am, the robbers arrived at the bank in Maitama District, near Nicon Hilton Hotel but were hampered by news that some policemen were on their trail.

However, they were able to cart away about N221,000 from the bank but in the process, shot dead a police sergeant whose identity could not be ascertained at press time.

The robbers, while escaping through AYA in Asokoro district, met a police blockade and began shooting sporadically.

The police team promptly replied, unaware that there was a second vehicle with some members of the gang.

The hoodlums in the second vehicle shot dead another policeman and injured three others.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adebayo, confirmed the robbery and said he had sent signals to the neighbouring states of Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi and Niger to track down the criminals.

He, however, denied knowledge of police casualty, saying he just heard it from journalists.

Adebayo also warned bankers to refrain from using residential areas for business and be more security conscious.

However, the police high command led by the Inspector-General (IG), Mr. Tafa Balogun, have been scored high by the Lower House of the National Assembly for outstanding security delivery given the difficult condition in which they operate.

Giving the pass mark during a courtesy visit to the IG by the House Committee on Police Affairs, its chairman, Emmanuel Bwacha, said: "The performance of the police under Balogun has been quite impressive given the limited resources available to the police force.

"The annual budget of the Nigeria Police is far below the budget of the new Scotland Yard Police. The Nigeria Police has performed very effectively with the meagre Federal allocations available to it."

Calling on economic and political stakeholders to support the force, the committee members said the Police Trust Fund which would turn around the lives of personnel would soon be ready.

Responding, the IG said: "The police high command will always ensure that the performance of the police in Nigeria which at present is above board will be surely sustained."
