Osun denies ban on boreholes
From Betram Nwannekanma, Osogbo

THE Osun Government has denied enacting a law banning private borehole business in the state. Officials said such enterprises did not exist because they were probably not viable.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian in Osogbo the state capital, the chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources Ibrahim Dauda said government had put in "enormous efforts" over the last one year to provide potable water to the residents.

He was speaking on the non-availability of water sellers in the state and the activities of the committee in making water available to the people.

According to the lawmaker, existing structures already in place and may have discouraged investors from venturing to ensure the availability of water to the people; into water business as is in other states.

Some of these structures, he said include, the rehabilitation of various water dams in the state, the sinking of water boreholes in all the secondary schools in the state, provision of mini-industrial water borehole at the palaces of the Ooni of Ife, Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland and Ataoja of Osogbo, and the building of 11-mini-water projects in various areas in the state.

With this, Dauda said, water shortages being experienced in the state at present will be over in the next one year, as every nook and cranny of the state will have been covered at the third phase of the project which also will be collaborated by the efforts of the state Water Corporation.

His words: "In the next one year, the Ministry of Water Resources will be concerned with just maintenance of the mini-water works state-wide and not supplying or sinking of boreholes since enough would have been dug to meet at least 60-65 percent of the population".

Dauda also said, with the level of commitment, which his committee, the ministry of Water Resources and the State Water Corporation, all technical hitches that may be militating against water supply in the state would have disappeared.

To further guarantee water supply in the urban and rural areas, two motorized boreholes with two giant separate water tanks will be commissioned next week at Ifon, on the out-skirts of Osogbo, to solve the water needs of the rural population within the area.

He however appealed to the residents, to pay up their water bills promptly to aid in buying of water treatment chemicals, which will ensure constant supply and maintenance.
