Academy of letters inducts Benin monarch
THE Benin monarch, Omo N'Oba Erediauwa, was honoured on Wednesday by the Nigerian Academy of Letters which made him an honorary fellow. The academy comprises distinguished Nigerian professors.
The monarch's experience as a former chancellor of the University of Ibadan and his own biography, I remain, sir, your obedient servant, were cited as the reasons for admitting him into the academy.
In the citation read during a brief ceremony in his palace in Benin, the academy described the biography as a statement and evaluation of the life and times of the Benin Monarch.
According to the academy, the book is also an authoritative and historical compendium, containing events and situations that marked the evolution of the country.
"New perspectives and insights have therefore been brought on such events as the military incidents of 1966, and subsequent political upheavals culminating in the Nigerian civil war from 1967-1970," the academy added.
At the colourful ceremony were an array of Fellows of the Academy and palace chiefs, Professors Ayo Banjo, Tekena Tamuno, Ayo Bamgbose, Segun Odunuga and Rotimi Badejo. The current president of the Academy, Prof. Dan Izevbaye was also present.
Izevbaye said the academy moved the ceremony to the palace as a mark of respect for the character of the monarch. He noted that the honour was not because of Erediauwa's royal function but because of his distinction as a distinguished scholar.
Izevbaye noted that the ceremony ought to have held at the August 12 convocation at the University of Lagos.
The monarch apologised for his inability to attend the convocation and thanked the academy's magnanimity in moving the ceremony to his palace.
He assured of his willingness to support the academy and assist in whatever way possible towards its development.
He advised the academy to sustain the efforts being taken to make it achieve greater heights, urging the members to constitute themselves into a formidable and result-oriented think-tank for the benefit of the country.
