Abia commercial vehicles to get uniform colours, security numbers
From Gordi Udeajah, Umuahia

TO checkmate robbers who use commercial vehicles, including motorcycles popularly called Okada in robbing commuters, the Abia State Government has introduced uniform colours for all vehicles operating in the state.

Besides, all such vehicles and motorcycles are to be registered with the state Ministry of Transport, which thereafter will issue security numbers to be boldly written on the vehicles.

The new policy was announced on Wednesday in Umuahia by the state Commissioner for Transport and Housing, Chief Tony Ururuka, while handing over buses to the beneficiaries of the state Transport Loan Scheme.

The beneficiaries are of the first phase of the 100 L300 Mitsubishi buses and assorted cars.

He urged the beneficiaries to ensure that they abide by the traffic rules, saying, "You must ensure that you are not contravened by the law enforcement agencies and strive to repay the loan to enable others benefit".

In his address, Chief Ben Etie, the co-ordinator of the scheme, had affected positively the lives of artisans and tradesmen by providing them with the necessary tools.

Etie said since June this year when Governor Orji Uzo Kalu commissioned new motorcycles, the scheme had distributed 1134 motorcycles to the 17 councils of the state and many indigenes and even friends of Abia who live outside the state.

He said hundreds of bicycles had been distributed and order placed for 100,000 wheelbarrows to get to every family in the state, while large number of generators had been procured for distribution under the loan scheme and interest-free.

The buses, which are valued at N750,000 each, would be given to any applicant who makes 50 per cent down-payment and pledges to pay the balance in 15 months.
