Brothers, others vie for Bauchi Rep's seat
TWO brothers, Isa Musa Matori and Abdullahi Usman Matori are among contestants for the Bauchi Federal Constituency seat by an election billed for Saturday, October 9.
Mr. Abdullahi Usman Matori of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) lost his bid for a second term in the House of Representatives to Aminu Mohammed Dan-Bauchi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the April 2003 elections. Following a series of litigations, however, the Appeal Court sitting in Jos nullified Dan-Bauchi's election.
Mr. Isa Musa Matori, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Assembly Matters was said to have defeated Abubakar Billy Tafawa Balewa, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youths, who is also the eldest grandson of the late Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa at the just concluded Bauchi Local Council primaries of the PDP for the bye-election.
Usman Matori, the defeated candidate of the ANPP in the 2003 elections, had challenged the election of Dan-Bauchi from the Bauchi High Court to the Appeal Court, which voided the poll. He was returned by the ANPP to contest the bye-election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Commissioner in Bauchi, Mr. Wakdung Gomwalk told journalists on Tuesday that 14 political parties collected the nomination and personal data forms for the exercise.
"We have informed all the necessary and important stakeholders about our intention to conduct the bye-election on Saturday, October 9, 2004 and they have assured us of their conviction, commitment and determination to play the role specified for them by the law," Gomwalk said.
He explained that all the registered political parties in the state had responded to the notice of election passed to their chairmen during a recent meeting the commission held with them. The commission, he explained, had commenced preparations for the successful conduct of the election.
Gomwark revealed that INEC had reserved the materials for the conduct of the poll and called on the electorates in the constituency to turn out en-mass to exercise their franchise.
He said that while the training of adhoc personnel will start on Tuesday next week at designated centres, other officials will be selected from institutions of higher learning in the state to give credibility to the exercise.
