Police in Plateau warn against protest
From Isa Abdusalami, Jos

PLATEAU State police command has warned against public protests over the recent increase in fuel prices.

The command says it has not granted permission to any individuals or groups to stage a demonstration or rally.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Isah Adejo (ASP), reminded residents that the Public Order Act and Emergency Power laws were still in place in the state.

"This is with regards to protests, demonstrations, rallies, processions, picketing and all forms of unauthorised assemblies and meetings," he said.

The police officer advised the residents to go about their lawful businesses without fear as the command has put in place precautionary measures to forestall any possible breakdown of law and order and any threat to lives and property.

He also warned that the police would not hesitate to bring the full wrath of the law to bear on violators of the notice.`

In a related development, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has joined other Nigerians to condemn the hike in the prices of petroleum products, describing it as a step towards anarchy.

NANS has therefore, declared today as a mass action day against the Federal Government until it reverses its decision.

NANS called on all students to say "no to autocracy, but support democracy by protesting against bad governance."

A statement by the NANS Senate President, Musa Aleichenu, in Jos, said government has given Nigerians independence day anniversary gift of hardship with another hike in fuel price by 20 per cent.

According to the students, it has become clear that government lacks new ideas and policies to better the lot of the people.

The statement reads: "If the Minister of Finance's announcement to all Nigerians that our foreign reserves have hit $12 billion mark which shows remarkable improvement on the economy is true, then what is the rationale behind this recent increment in pump price of petroleum products?

Also, the Christian Foundation for social Justice and Equity has condemned the action referring to it as the handiwork of a cabal in government.

Describing the decision as having a human face, the foundation urged government to promptly reverse the unpopular decision without any further delay.

A statement by the foundation's Executive Director, Mr. Joseph Sangosanya, called on well meaning Nigerians to defend their democratic rights to peace fully mobilise and protest all evils being perpetrated by the present administration.

The statement said the frequent increase in fuel prices confirms the dictatorial nature of the government.

The statement urged all lovers of democracy to protest against what it called "cynical deceit by the government"
