Embrace accountability, IG tells police
From John-Abba Ogbodo, Abuja and Alex Olise, Lagos

OFFICERS and men of the Nigeria Police Force have been advised to embrace the spirit of accountability, transparency, service and loyalty in the discharge of their official duties.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Tafa Balogun, gave the advice at the quarterly interactive session with the inspectorate and rank and file at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He also charged them to always be "polite, civil and courteous" to the people by adopting the "Sir culture", pointing out that policemen are also public servants.

According to him, the Force would no longer tolerate corruption in the service as it is not relenting in its effort to flush out the bad eggs in its fold while the good ones will be motivated through "handsome rewards".

The IG lauded the Force on the recent breakthrough in the arrest of a radical ("Taliban") Islamic fundamentalist, Abubakar Aliyu Abubakar, a 200 level dropout of the University of Maiduguri.

According to the IG, during interrogation of the suspect who was apprehended while fleeing, he claimed to be an indigene of Yobe State and son of Alhaji Madugu Karfi, an erstwhile secretary to the former military government of Borno State between 1987 and 1990.

The suspect gave the name of his gang's leader as "Mohammed Ali", who recruited them after being trained as Sharia law enforcers.

The suspect further told police that on September 20, 2004, the gang, numbering about 30, attacked Bama Police Station in Borno State, killing the Area Commander, Mr. Turajo Ismailia, an Assistant Commissioner for Police (ACP).

Balogun commended men of the Operation Fire-for-Fire for the recent killing of 14 members of the gang and recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition from them.

He assured the public in the North-Eastern zone of the country of safety of lives and property.
