NATIONAL NEWS Cameroun to hand over fleeing Talibans — POLICE Friday, October 01, 2004 MAIDUGURI — THE Police said Tuesday that Cameroun would hand over five members of a radical Islamic group who fled across the border after a murderous attack on a police station and subsequent clashes. Ade Ajakaiye, police commissioner in Borno State, said discussions with Cameroun were under way to hand over the insurgents to Nigeria through Interpol, the international police organisation. “The Interpol is arranging for the extradition of the five Taliban members being held in Cameroun and we hope it will not take long to have them in our hands to face justice”, Ajakaiye said. The self-styled Talibans are university undergraduates who claim to draw inspiration from those in Afghanistan. On September 20, they attacked two Borno State police stations, killing four policemen and a civilian, and carting away ammunitions before retreating into the Mandara mountains on the border with Cameroun. Five of them have been arrested in Cameroun after crossing the border.
