ABEOKUTA—STUDENTS of the Universty of Agriculture Abeokuta (UNAAB) and men of the police command were yesterday engaged in a clash which unconfirmed report said left several students injured.
The institution was immediately closed down by management on what it called mid semester break.
The clash which was said to have followed the students protest on Wednesday and Thursday over the recent fuel price increase was said to have occurred following the invitation of the police by the university management.
The police were said to have fired tear gas to disperse the students who were said to have barricaded the gates preventing anybody from entering or leaving the university campus prompting the university management to invite the police to bring the situation under control.
The students union president, Comrade Wole Oladapo told newsmen that several of his colleagues have been injured and that some of the students union leaders were suspended under spurious allegation which he said prompted the barricading of the gates.
He said that the university was hiding under the problem which arose from the erection of the mast of a GSM company which the students protested to deal with perceived enemies who took part in the the fuel crisis protest.
The students union leader said that the students were unhappy over the erection of a GSM mast on their campus and that questions were raised which the university management could not answer adding that those involved were quickly suspended because they were union leaders who led the protest over the fuel price hike.
Vanguard learnt that the situation degenerated to what some people including staff described as being out of control prompting the University Senate to order the closing of the school for two weeks and asked students to vacate the campus and hostels immediately.
