ABUJA — FORMER Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche has urged Nigerians to bear the pains of the on-going economic recovery measures as part of collective effort and sacrifice in the achievement of the vision of the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.
Speaking yesterday on the occasion of his 43 birthday celebrated low key with a few of his friends in Abuja, Prince Nwuche, who used the occasion to spare a thought on the nation’s 44th independence anniversary, stated that issues of unity, fair play and equity should be emphasized in the polity.
According to him: “44 is a significant age in the history of our nation and I wish Nigerians well; I wish them God’s protection, God’s guidance. I wish the country peace and stability. The journey has been interesting; there have been ups and downs, but I believe that every passing year, just like in the life of any individual, the country gets more mature.
“The issues that emanate will be handled with more maturity and more carefully. I think it is important that as we celebrate independence, we pray for the country, for her unity. We should begin to emphasise the issues that have troubled her so long; we should address issues of justice, fair play and equity without which it is difficult to weld people together.
“But most importantly, we wish the country very well; we wish Nigerians very well. We pray for peace, for stability and progress and we urge all to support the government and leadership in these efforts at trying to address the many issues that confront the nation at this critical juncture.
“We must also be aware that we are at a critical stage. It has not been an easy journey. When our government came to power in 1999, we met an almost comatose economy, which the government is trying its level best to revive. There will be pains in this process; we should bear with them and its leader has come to office with a vision and he should be allowed a space and time to implement that vision”.
Asked to comment on the achievements of the National Assembly so far, the former Deputy Speaker said that “well, I have not been following those issues (treatment and passage of bills) too closely, but I believe the National Assembly is doing its best as well and I wish them very well”.
