By Evelyn Usman & Nwannedinma Onu
Friday, October 01, 2004

ABUJA—The Inspector- General Of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun has asked all States Commissioners of Police to utilize efficiently   all reliable networks at  their disposal  to sustain low crime level in their states, with a view to ensuring  that activities to mark the   44th independence anniversary are not disrupted .

The IG who in a meeting with the commissioners of Police, Assistant Inspectors- General of Police and Deputy   -Inspectors-General of Police held Wednesday at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, also enjoined the Police chiefs to map out   security measures to nip in the bud activities of hoodlums who were likely to hijack the proposed strike by the Nigeria Labour   Congress. (NLC)

He said all Police barracks, Police formations and other vulnerable key points should be protected against attack by hoodlums   especially during the proposed strike. However, he warned that in ensuring that Police formations were not attacked, innocent   citizens should not be treated unjustly, informing that it was against the rules of community policing.

Balogun who commended efforts of the Commissioners at maintaining a low level crime rates in their different states, urged them   to fight corruption within and outside the Force, even as he charged them to set up Anti-Corruption Monitory Unit to arrest both   Police extortioners and corrupters of Policemen. The criminal code, he pointed out , “ criminalises both the act of giving and   receiving bribe and gratification by public officers. The Force he noted had shown erring police officers the way out of the force,   adding that it would continue to do so until rotten eggs were flushed out of the system.
