BENIN CITY — SECURITY was yesterday beefed up in Benin City and Ekpoma in Edo State following threats by students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma to embark on a protest march tagged “Operation Total Paralysis” in the state today (October 1) against the recent fuel price hike.
Already, mobile policemen and detectives have been deployed on a 24-hour patrol of areas where the campuses of the students are located in Ugbowo and Ekpoma town.
The students had vowed on Tuesday during a warning protest to the Edo State Government House, that they would make the country ungovernable if the decision of the federal government to increase fuel price is not reversed before the October 1 anniversary.
But Speaking in Benin City yesterday, the Edo State Police Command's spokesman, Mr Fatai Kiyomi told Vanguard that the police are battle ready against any breakdown of law and order in the state as security operatives are on a red alert to avert any circumstances.
“We are not saying they should not hold the rally, but if they do, it has to be orderly like the responsible one they had recently. We are prepared for them and are moving round the state. It would be an extensive patrol against unruly behaviour. I must warn however that we would resist any attempt to cause breach in state security. We would not tolerate it at all. They have embraced the civilized way of doing things, let them maintain it”, he said
Meanwhile, a group, the Downtrodden Forum for Democracy (DFFD) yesterday threatened to join civil groups and students in the struggle against the decision of the federal government to increase fuel prices.
According to its President, Comrade Nowinta Igbotako, the people would not be detered by intimidation.
