Inclusion of lawmakers in pension Bill illegal — Oyegun

By Osaro Okhomina
Friday, October 01, 2004

BENIN CITY — FORMER civilian Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Chairman of the Association of   Senior Civil Servants in the state, Comrade Victor Egbokhare yesterday agreed that the inclusion of members of the State   House of Assembly in the recent Bill passed on life pension for political office holders in the state is unconstitutional, warning that   any attempt by the state governor to sign the Bill into law could throw him into a crisis of confindence with the workers.

According to Chief Oyegun, the Bill as passed by the House is horrible and a sensitive one indicating that the legislators are   looking for an avenue to enrich themselves in and out of office, while Comrade Egbokhare noted that the Bill in all ramification   lacks merit and is an attempt to drain the resources of the state.

Odigie-Oyegun and Egbokhare made their seperate positions on the Bill known to Vanguard in Benin City.
Chief Oyegun said, "when I read about the provisions of the Bill as it affects the life pension to these people, I said this was an   horrible Bill. It is only fair that in line with the constitution, the president and the governors get life pensions after office. It follows,   because for these people, while in office must have taken some sensitive decisions and their life after service has to be   gauranteed with the paraphenilia of office. And it will guide against corrupt practices.

“But to the inclusion of legislators as life pensioners, it is strange to me and it becomes an horrible situation if the governor does   not take a second look at the Bill before giving his assent. We are in a strange world”, he stated.
