in Abuja bank raid

A gang of
robbers on Thursday killed a mobile policeman attached to the Adetokunbo
Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2 branch of Continental Trust Bank and wounded some
customers in an early morning operation.
While
fleeing, the five-man robbery gang engaged some policemen at Yanyan
Junction in a gun duel. The robbers caught the policemen unawares and
killed four of them. Two others were wounded and many passersby were
injured.
Head of the
police anti-robbery squad who did not disclose his name said the gang
carried out the raid at about 9.30 a.m carting away N210,000. No arrests
were made as at press time.
An
eyewitness said, The gang drove to the bank in a 406 Peugeot car. As soon
as we heard gunshots, all these phone people (commercial phone operators)
started calling the police. In fact, an okada man drove to NICON Hilton
junction to meet those policemen standing there but they said did not have
fuel in their car. Another okada went after the thieves, met them at
that junction (Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent/Ahmadu Bello Street Junction)
and told the traffic wardens and policemen there to stop the vehicle but
they just looked at the car and let it go.
Customers
who had come to deposit or withdraw their money from the bank were shocked
to see the lifeless body of the policeman said to be a sergeant in the
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Mobile Police Force
(MOPOL). The latest robbery brings to six the number of banks robbed in
the Federal Capital Territory in the last two months.
The FCT
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Adebayo told newsmen that he was not
aware of any casualty during the attack, but quickly added that he was yet
to receive full report from his men on the field.
