Friday, October 1st 2004 HOME | back to previous page Senate tasks FG on agric research By Onoja Audu Special Correspondent, Jos   Senate Committee on Agriculture has urged the Federal Government to improve the funding of research institutes if the objectives of such institutes are not to be compromised. During the committee�s visit to the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, near Jos, the Vice-Chairman, Senator Haruna Garba, praised the efforts of NVRI, saying increased funding would enable it to effectively discharge its mandate of promoting animals health thought the discovery and control of animal diseases and to sustain its yearly production of more than N70 million doses of about 20 types of animal vaccines. Garba added that sustained increased funding would enable NVRI to continue to be a reference point for all animal diseases in the country. "Research is expensive because it has a long gestation period. This makes it incumbent on us to fund our own research properly, as international donors do not want us to progress in our own research, knowing that it could bail us out of perpetual dependence on them," the committee vice chairman added. The institute�s Director, Dr. Lami Hanantu Lombin, praised the Federal Government for responding well to the institute�s clamour for financial assistance.     Copyright� 2004. All Rights Reserved.
