Reforms will outlive my administration, says Obasanjo

By Chesa Chesa,

Correspondent, Abuja

President Olusegun Obasanjo has pledged to give legal backing to the numerous reforms he has carried out in the country so that they would outlive his tenure by 2007.

Speaking on Thursday when he hosted the outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Akira Matsui, who was on a farewell visit to the presidential villa, Obasanjo expressed his conviction that the reforms would continue beyond 2007 because they are for all Nigerians owned by everybody. They are not just government reforms.

Where necessary, legislation would be put in place to ensure that the reforms have legal foundation and support. Successful reforms also need to be on the agenda of a strong political party, not an individual crusade, he added.

Obasanjo assured the Japanese envoy that Nigerian government would carry its development partners along but asked that they reciprocate by supporting governments reform agenda and quest for debt relief. The president also received outgoing Malian ambassador, Mr. Seydou Diatigui Diarra, whom he told that the Federal Government was prepared to open official channels for the importation of Malian textiles into Nigeria but would not tolerate dumping.

The envoy, who has spent five years in Nigeria, had requested that Obasanjo reconsiders the ban on importation of Senegal or Kampala textile materials from Mali.
