Friday, October 1st 2004 HOME | back to previous page FG awards contract for design of Third Benue Bridge By Don Bassey Correspondent, Abuja   The Federal Government has contracted the designing of the Third Benue Bridge to indigenous consultants, Etteh Aro & Partner. The contract, to be completed in three months, is valued at N245 million. The bridge, measuring 1.9 kilometres is to be constructed across the River Benue between Loko (Nasarawa State) and Oweto (Benue State) as a link between the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the nine South-South/South-Eastern states. Speaking at the ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, Works Minister, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, said the bridge was one of the four President Olusegun Obasanjo promised at his inauguration for the current term. The others include the Second Niger Bridge, Ibi Bridge and the Mfum Bridge in addition to two smaller bridges to be constructed at Akwa Ibom State and Kebbi State. Ogunlewe said construction of the Loko-Oweto Bridge would commence in January or February 2005 as his ministry had already got quotations from competent contractors for the project. �Before construction bridges have to be designed. Government has concluded arrangements for design of four bridges. The first one is the one today where we are witnessing the formal signing of agreement between the consultant and the Federal Ministry of Works. �After approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), we want to formalise that process by officially signing the contract for the design of the bridge. By January/February 2005, we will commence construction because we have already advertised for the construction and we have got quotations from contractors,� he said.   Copyright� 2004.
