Pipeline explosion: Fleeing villagers yet to return

By Victor Ebimomi

Reporter, Lagos

Two weeks after a pipeline explosion rocked the area, residents of Imore village in Lagos State are yet to return to their abode despite the state directive that they should do so.

The explosion occurred on September 16, 2004, killing more than 200 people.

The explosion was allegedly as a result of activities of vandals who ruptured the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines.

The residents took to their heels immediately after the explosion for fear of being arrested by security agents who swooped on the area to apprehend and rescue survivors.

Daily Independent learnt that the villagers decided to stay away because they still entertain fears that security agents might still arrest them.

Nobody wants to be a scapegoat because the police are still there, a resident of Imore village said.

Meanwhile, promises to beef up security along the pipeline, particularly in all the areas that are notorious for illegal oil business such as Ilado, Ilase, Idi-Mango, among others, to prevent further vandalization, is yet to be fulfilled.

However to stem the incessant pipeline explosions in the state, the state government last week advised community leaders in the riverine areas to form vigilance groups that would help in policing the pipelines around their communities.

The NNPC has said it would not compensate the villagers for the disaster.
