Onitsha traders union suspends chairman, three others

By Anayo Okoli
Monday, October 13, 2003

ONITSHA THE crisis rocking the leadership of traders union in Anambra State deepened, weekend, with the suspension of four key members of ASMATA, the umbrella union of all the traders in the state. The suspension came on the heels of a threat by the traders to sue the Anambra State government to court for interfering in their union. The traders' union in the state has been embroiled in crisis occasioned by allegations of misappropriation of funds by some of the leaders.

Those suspended according to a press statement issued by ASMATA include, Mr. Obi Egbuna, the chairman of the traders in the popular Onitsha Main Market; Mr Patrick Ebolue, the vice president of ASMATA; Mr Ifeanyi Obiazi and Mr. Clement Ilo. The statement which was signed by Chief Chukwudi Onyekwelu, the public relations officer of the union, said that they were suspended for sundry allegations which include, "passing false information to the public and the government, undermining the interest of the entire market leaders and the traders in the state who stand for peace and stability." The statement restated the confidence the traders have in the Emeka Asoanya led union.

Meanwhile, the traders said they would drag the Ngige administration to court for allegedly interfering in the running of the traders union. Source close to the leadership of the traders said that they are already shopping for "two eminent senior advocates of Nigeria."
