PZ Workers Get Raw Deal from Labour Union
From Emmanuenl Ugwu in Enugu

The national delegates conference of the National Union of Chemical, Foot-wear, Rubber, Leather and Non-metallic Products Emplo-yees (NUCFRLANMPE), which ended at Enugu yesterday was blighted by protests following the exclusion of Patterson Zochonis (PZ) workers from the conference after collecting N8 million conference levy from them.

The deleagtes, who spoke to newsmen from their hiding place in a hotel alleged that they were not only disenfranchised but also threatened with possible bodyharm hence their going into hiding.

Spokesman of the aggrieved delegates, Mr. Oladipupo K. Bello, said that the national secretariat of NUCFRLANMPE descended heavily on PZ workers for daring to challenge the incumbent leadership of the union.

"We've been disenfranchised," he lamented, adding, "PZ branch was singled oust for victimisation because we have a presidential candidate."

Bello, who was to challenge the incumbent president of NUCFRLANMPE, Mr. Moses Gbadebo, for the union's top post, alleged that he was tactically disqualified on a spusrious charge of embezzling N1.5 million belonging to the Lagos Area 1 Council of the union.

According to him, the allegation was a grand design to edge him out of the race to pave the way for the return of Gbadebo, adding that the "personal war" was ultimately extended to all the 15 delegates from PZ, who were duly invited for the conference through a letter signed by the national scretary, Mr. Emma Ugboaja.

"The present leadership has gagged all voices of dissent in order to perpetuate themselves in power," he said.

Bello wondered why Gbadebo has engaged in the politics of silencing opposition to his second term ambition when there more crdfible candidates abound in the union to vie for the top post.

PZ branch of the unionhad paid N8 million conference levy, the highest by any branch of the uniuon and pays over n1 million check off dues monthly but politics of self succession has been used to marginalise them from their national union.
