Igbo Group Endorses Restructuring of Nigeria By Nseobong Okon-Ekong Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) has commended the proposal for a constitutional and political re-engineering of Nigeria along a six-zone structure put forward by the Presidential Adviser, Legal and Constitutional Matters, Chief Ojo Maduekwe. Evangelist Elliot Uko, President IYM made the commendation in Lagos yesterday saying this may be a pointer to the fact that the federal government may have finally decided to heed the voice of reason by agreeing to a fundamental re-structuring of the country, which many groups including the IYM have advocated for some time now. Describing Maduekwe's proposal as one of the boldest statement's to come out of the Obasanjo presidency in recent times, Uko urged the federal government to immediatley set in motion modalities that will see to the quick realisation of this proposal. Maduekwe was reported to have put forward this proposal at a lecture in Abuja as part of activities marking the country's 44th independence anniversary. He reportedly said that the 36 state structure no longer serves the end of national unity and national integration nor has it satisfactorily cured the fever of self-determination. According to Uko, if this proposal is pursued to a logical conclusion, it will mark a mighty step taken by the Obasanjo administration towards political re-structuring of the federation. "It will be possible to say then that Mr. President is serious about one, united Nigeria."
