</SPAN>at former governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lamidi Adesina, describing him as a slippery man who should be pitied because his end may be disastrous.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Akinfenwa s condemnation came on the heels of his description of the AD convention held in Lagos on Wednesday as a charade.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">The AD chieftain who spoke with our correspondent in a telephone interview on Thursday was reacting to Adesina s condemnation of the leadership of <I>Afenifere</I></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> for decrying the Alliance for Democracy over last Wednesday s national convention held in Lagos.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">In an earlier scathing remark, Adesina had said the leaders of <I>Afenifere</I></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> who said the AD convention was a ruse<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>needed to have their heads examined.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">But reacting to the criticism Akinfenwa said it was unfortunate that such a statement could be made by Adesina to the leaders of <I>Afenifere</I></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">He said when the leadership of the socio-political group gave Adesina the governorship ticket for Oyo State in 1998, he did not condemn them, but now he had turned around to cast aspersions on them.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> He is biting the fingers that fed him, and it is very unfortunate. I am sorry for him because his end may be disastrous, Akinfenwa said.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">The politician further described Adesina as a slippery person who spoke  from the two sides of his mouth .<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">The factional crisis that rocked the AD has left <I>Afenifere</I></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> disunited as some of its members are divided along the party s factional lines.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">While some of its members supported the Chief Bisi Akande-led faction, others pitched tents with the Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa faction.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">The gulf within the group was further widened when in August, some chieftains of the pan-Yoruba group led by its acting leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti declared Akinfenwa as the recognised leader of the AD.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Following the disapproval that followed the Akure declaration, the leader of <I>Afenifere</I></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">, Chief Abraham Adesanya, called a reconciliatory meeting of the two factions of the group at his Apapa, Lagos residence.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">The peace initiative did not yield fruit, however, as the two groups stormed out of the meeting.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Also reacting to the Wednesday convention of the AD, Akinfenwa said it was a mere charade.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoBodyText style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; LINE-HEIGHT: normal; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">According to him, it was a sheer display of access to money by the Bisi Akande- led faction of the AD.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">He said contrary to the claim by the conveners of the Lagos gathering, the delegates were not genuine members of the AD, but people bribed to attend the event.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoBodyText style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; LINE-HEIGHT: normal; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> For as long as the great majority of AD members across the nation were not involved, in the exercise, it remained a charade and invalid, Akinfenwa told our correspondent .<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Describing Akande s leadership of the AD as a stillbirth, Akinfenwa said the convention was in conflict with the decision of the court on July 29, 2004, which said no action should be taken pending the final disposition of the suit.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">He also faulted the representation of the INEC at the occasion, saying they also contravened the July 29, 2004 ruling of the court on the matter.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 8.95pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> They had no right to be at the convention, said Akinfenwa.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"><![if !supportEmptyParas]><![endif]>&nbsp;<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P> <DIV></DIV></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> <TABLE width="100%" border=0> <TBODY> <TR> <TD> <HR> <P align=center><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif, Trebuchet MS" color=#000099 size=2>Copyright� 2004.
