Iyamabo, Ex-FCID boss in auto crash

Doctors at a private hospital in Maryland, Lagos are battling to save the life of a former Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of police, Mrs. Rachael Iyamabo, who recently survived a total multiple auto crash in which three persons reportedly died.

Among the dead is a close confidant of the retired AIG simply identified as Sister Lola.

Mrs. Iyamabo, who retired about five years ago, headed the elite Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Alagbon-Close, Ikoyi, Lagos where she stood out as a strict officer.

She was said to be travelling from Ekpoma to Benin enroute Lagos three weeks ago when the crash occurred.

Saturday Independent learnt that she had began the trip on the fateful day in her private car when suddenly the vehicle crashed, but all the occupants, including her late friend escaped unhurt.

The vehicle was damaged beyond repairs prompting them to continue the trip in a commercial bus, which also crashed minutes after boarding.

It was at the scene of the second accident that operatives of the police Operation-fire-for-fire who were on patrol spotted her and immediately opted to assist her and her friends in their operational vehicle to Lagos.

But it was not long after take-off that the police vehicle too crashed, killing three persons instantly.

Rescue workers at the scene of the accident quickly evacuated corpses of the victims to a nearby morgue while Mrs. Iyamabo was rushed to the specialist hospital for medical attention.

While at the hospital, the Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun was contacted and he then directed that Iyamabo be flown abroad for urgent treatment.

However, doctors at the hospital assured that though her condition was critical, they were equal to the task.

Experts were brought in and her right femur, which was severely damaged was promptly replaced at a cost of N1.5m.

For now, she is said to be out of the danger list, she is still undergoing intensive care in the hands of doctors while friends and visitors are restricted from seeing her.
