Monday, October 4th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Wabara hails senators�election at Pan-African Parliamentary Union By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi NationalAssembly Correspondent,Abuja   Senate President Adolphus Wabara has praised Senator Lee Maeba�s election as the Chairman of Pan-African Parliamentary Committee, saying it showed that Nigeria is now accepted in the comity of international parliamentarians. Wabara also praised Senator Mohammed Ohiare who was elected Chairman of West African caucus of the Pan African Parliament. Lauding the election of Maeba as Chairman of the Parliament�s Committee on Trade, Customs and Immigration and Ohiare�s election, Wabara said these were proof that the parliamentarians have confidence in the leadership of the National Assembly. In the election held in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa on September 28, Maeba defeated candidates from Egypt and Burundi to emerge the chairman. In all, 10 standing committee shave since been constituted at the Pan-African �Parliament. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Henry Ugbolue, Wabara assured Maeba and Ohiare of the backing of the National Assembly in their new international roles and also charged them to seek ways of improving the international rating of Nigeria while on their new assignments at the Pan-African Parliament. Meanwhile, contrary tore ports that Nigeria has shelved the idea of hosting the 2007 summit of the IPU, Wabara has since commenced a strong lobby, which has reportedly receive the backing of the Pan-African Parliament.           Copyright� 2004.
