Obasanjo, Konare flag-off final push to eradicate polio

By Don Bassey

correspondent, Kano

Chairman of African Union, Presiden tOlusegun Obasanjo and his Malian counterpart, Professor Alpha Konare and governors, ministers and National Assembly members on Saturday converged on Kano for the launch of the 2004 synchronised National Immunisation days for West and Central African countries.

Contrary to expectations, the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano State, venue of the launch, was filled to capacity.

Obasanjo reiterated governments determination to eradicate wild polio on the country and make it polio-free by 2005.

He urged parents to ensure that those they admit into their homes wore the Kick out polio apron so as not to admit 41 9 men access to their homes.

Obasanjo flagged off the programme by immunising Zainab, the one-year-old daughter of the state governor, Ibrahim Shekarau. Konare and other African Heads of State and state governors present immunised more than 50 children mobilised from Kano Local Government and neighbouring states.

The launch of the programme in Kano is symbolic considering that the government in the state had earlier refused to allow children to take the oral polio vaccine, claiming that it contained anti-infertility elements.

Rotary International President, Chief John Majiyagbe, said Rotary contributed immensely to the fight against polio globally and 35 million dollars to Nigeria.

The final push to polio eradication flag-off precedes the last but one NID coming up between October 9 and12.
