Increasing wave of violence
in schools in Abia State has drawn the ire of the government, which warned that
it would shut down any school whose students engage in violent demonstration.
Addressing the Old Boys
Association of National High School, Aba, the Commissioner for Education,
Professor Mkpa Agu Mkpa, said government would not tolerate unruly behaviour
from students, stating that it is only in an atmosphere of peace that genuine
intellectual development could take place.
He expressed regret at the
level of violence in secondary schools, declaring that government would not
build any structure in violence prone schools.
The commissioner urged
principals to endeavour to mete out appropriate punishment to incorrigible
students. He said they would have failed in their duties if they allowed threat
to life and vandalism to become the order of the day in schools.
National
President of the association, Chief Anab Atulomeh, praised the government for
its efforts at ensuring discipline in the state school system and urged the
government to ensure that the school is helped to regain its lost glory.
Atulomeh said the association had launched an endowment fund to assist the
school. He deplored a recent fight between students of the school and their
counterparts in Umuaghai Secondary School, Aba that led to the burning down of
the administrative block and laboratory of the National High School. The
government has given assurance that it would soon provide additional laboratory
equipment, books and other teaching and learning materials to allmodel schools.
Mkpa gave this indication when the Old Students Association of Evangel High
School, Umuahia visited him. He explained that it was in line with governments
emphasis on free and qualitative education and he asked old students of schools
to support in building alma mater through the provision of modern teaching and
learning aids.
