Abia demolishes illegal structures in schools

By Uche Nwosu

Special Correspondent, Umuahia

In a move to preserve the academic environment of schools in Abia State from further abuse by businessmen that use the spaces to build lock up shops, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Technology has embarked on the demolition of such illegal shops.

The commissioner, Mr. Ecebunwa Ubani, who led the demolition exercise said it became imperative after several warnings to owners of the illegal shops fell on deaf ears.

He said that would serve as a deterrent to others that are bent on taking the laws into their hands and check the proliferation of illegal structures that and up defacing the state.

Said he, “the exercise is not meant to witch-hunt anybody but to ensure that things are done properly”.

Despite this assurance, it was learnt that the demolition squad was not bringing down shops belonging to party chieftains and big wigs. Ubani deplored the activities of the businessmen, saying they were distracting children in their foundation level of education with business activities.

He, therefore, directed traders engaging in business transactions in the demolished shops or operating illegal markets and shops to move into existing markets and the business centres nearest to them.

Parents were particularly overjoyed at the demolitions since that would enable their children and wards to be able to learn without any unworthy distractions.

Some schools where the exercise took place are Cameroun Barracks Primary School, Tenant Road Nursery/Primary School, Seaside Primary School and Umuogele Primary School all in Aba.
