More than 2,000 members of a
group called Eagle Victory Movement enlivened Awka in Anamba State at the
weekend when they converged to brainstorm on who to support for the 2007
presidential election.
The members were drawn from
the 367 wards in the state. They under-studied the candidates vying for the
presidential seat and resolved that since the South-East that is clamouring for
the post has not got a candidate yet, it is proper to support former military
President, Ibrahim Babangida.
A source at the meeting said
members contended that of allthe candidates from the North, Babangida appears
the best experienced and qualified for the post. They also argued that on the
level of acceptability, Babangida stood out from other candidates. Speaking
after the meeting, the leader of the movement in the state, Chief George
Ezenwa, said democracy in Nigeria has not matured for green horns, adding that
there is the need for a person that is familiar with the political terrain and
knows what it takes to lead Nigeria.
We x-rayed all aspirants for
Aso Rock and discovered that barring any other permutations, the choice is
tilting towards Babangida, he said.
Ezenwa said it is out of
place to refer to Nigerias democracy as a military dominated politics,
explaining that by 2007 Babangida would have become a complete civilian having
mixed with the civil society andwould be ripe enough to pilot the affairs of
the country as a true civilian.
A youth organisation routing
for Babangida has for a weeknow been reaching out to towns unions and students
of Nnamdi AzikiweUniversity, Awka, Federal Polytechnic Okoh and the Univesity
of Technology, Uliin Ihiala Local Government.
One of the
leaders from Umuahia in Abia State, Mr. Donatus Onyema, said, Babangidas
policies were tailored towards youth empowerment and self-sustaining economy
compared to his subsequent successors.
