Ondo
State government has appealed to its counterparts across the federation to back
the withdrawal of the Onshore/Offshore dichotomy suit.
The
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Segun Mimiko made the appeal at the
weekend in Ogbagba Ola-Oluwa Local Government Area of Osun State during an
interview with newsmen.
Mimiko
who was in Ogbagba to celebrate with his Osun State counterpart on the occasion
of Ogbaagbaa Day, said it was morally wrong for any state or group of
individual to kick against the withdrawal of the suit.
He
noted that the withdrawal of the dichotomy suit would ensure equity, justice
and morality among the states.
The
suit, he said, should be withdrawn because that is the only way to ensure
justice, equity and fair play, adding that a lot of income is accruable to the
state from the offshore oil exploration.
The
SSG maintained that Ondo state,as one of the oil producing state suffers a lot
of devastation from oil exploration, urging that there is need to be treated
fairly.
The
fact that we suffer immense devastation from oil exploration should be enough
reason for us to be treated fairly, Mimiko said.
He
said the state government is doing a lot to ensue judicious spending of the
money accruing from oil derivation.
We
are doing well in terms of providing education, water, health care facilities
and rural electrifications.
In
Ondo state, we have our own equivalent of the NDDC, which is OSOPADEC of the 13
per cent derivation fund accrual from the federal government, 40 percent is
taken as first charge for the development of the oil producing areas of the
state. We are planning aN13 billion road project for the riverine areas, he
said.
Speaking
at the occasion, the Osun state governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola enjoined
private individuals and the citizenry to assist in the area of community
development noting that community development should not be left to the
government alone.
He
said members of the public have a very crucial role to play in this regards.
