Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige
has said that political independence being celebrated in Nigeria cannot be
complete without effective economic emancipation of the country and her
citizens.
Ngige, who said this in Awka while
speaking with newsmen on the 44th independence anniversary celebration
contended that for a nation like Nigeria to ensure real independence, its
people and economy should be empowered by the government.
He regretted that the dreams and
aspirations of the nation have not been met since the country became independent,
adding that it has become imperative that Nigerian leaders should ensure that
the ethos of good governance be actualized.
Ngige noted that most of the aspirations and economic expectations of
the people, including the creation of an enabling environment for economic and
social harmony, have been dashed, insisting that Nigerians should be given a
level playing ground to operate without any form of encumbrances.
Speaking on the agitations for a
President from the Southeast geographical zone, Ngige said the Igbo had the
population, men and material resources to achieve the goal.
Ngige called for the unity of
purpose among the Southeast politicians, insisting that such unity would
greatly ensure the realization of the project.
Earlier, Ngige had paid special
tributes to indigenes of the state who have done their best to ensure that the
state is not left behind in the race to achieve a negalitarian society and also
commended the selflessness and resilience of the members of the Anambra State
House of Assembly.
Besides
the march-pass by primary and post primary school students at the occasion,
members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state did not participate
in the celebration; in line with the directives of its National Executive
Council.
